Build a geographic map without starting from a picture

Choose Mapbox map in New Map. Search an address and choose Add pin, use Add location to place a pin manually, or open Import locations to review a CSV or published Google Sheet. Check the imported coordinates before adding the locations.

Use Draw on map for paths, areas, and coverage radii. Pan and zoom, then select Set starting view. In Map settings, choose the map style and the visitor search, filters, list, clustering, and nearby-location controls you want to offer. Nearby search asks the visitor for location permission; directions open Google or Apple Maps rather than providing in-app turn-by-turn navigation.

When an image map beats a geographic map

Most "interactive map" projects are not really geography problems. A festival site plan, a mall directory, a conference floor, a ski resort trail map, a building — none of them need latitude and longitude. They need your artwork, with clickable detail on top.

Preparing the map image

Pin accuracy is limited by how readable the underlying image is, so the export matters more than anything else in the process.

Export wide. 2000–2600px for a dense venue plan, 1600px for a simple layout. Visitors on retina screens will pinch to zoom, and a soft map looks broken no matter how good the pins are.
Trim the whitespace. Crop to the map itself. Empty margins waste embed height and push pins into a smaller area.
Drop labels you plan to replace. If a booth number will live in a pin popup, remove it from the artwork so the two never disagree after a floor change.
Keep contrast in mind. Choose a marker colour that reads against your busiest area, and override individual pins where it does not.

Structuring a map with a lot of points

Past roughly a dozen pins, an unstructured map turns into visual noise. Three things fix it:

Categories. Food, restrooms, stages, exits, exhibitors. Visitors get filter chips and can hide everything else.
Numbered markers. Ideal for a route, a tour, or a stand order — and they double as a legend when you list the same numbers in text below the embed.
Short titles, linked detail. Keep the popup to a name, one line, and a CTA. Send anyone who wants more to a real page.
